To help you get the very best out of your stay in the Cockermouth area we can offer you a range of half-day guided walks in the beautiful Buttermere valley, just a few miles south of the town. These easy-to-moderate walks are led by me, Richard Watson, a walker of many years’ experience with considerable knowledge of the area.
This small, friendly service is designed to help visitors get ‘off the beaten track’ a little, and to discover hidden places which they might otherwise miss. With me as your guide you will have the opportunity to experience at first hand the rich landscape, culture and wildlife of this lesser-known corner of the Lake District National Park.
Walks usually follow a lake shore (Buttermere, Crummock Water or Loweswater) for part of their route, though there are also sections through woodland and over farmland as well as across open country. We do not venture high onto the open mountainsides, but there are places where a walk takes us above the farmed area (the 'intake') to discover features such as tarns (small mountain lakes) and waterfalls. See the pictures on the next page....
- Walks can be arranged on a day to suit yourself and tailored to your ability and preference.
- Up to three people can be accommodated on a walk: individual walkers are welcome, as are two or three friends or family members walking together.
- Walks last about two and a half hours including stops for a rest or to admire the view.
- We will leave Cockermouth after breakfast and be back in time for lunch.
- Free transport is provided.
- The price is £20 for a single person, £30 for two people, or £40 for three people. This includes a piece of home-made cake as a snack.
NB. You definitely don't need a lot of expensive gear to join me on a Buttermere valley walk. However, the terrain can be rocky in places and sometimes wet underfoot, and the weather can be changeable, so strong footwear is essential, as is warm, waterproof clothing in all but the sunniest weather.

"We were fortunate that we booked Richard to lead us on a walk around Crummock Water. His local knowledge and the well-chosen route made for a very successful and satisfying morning. Richard was generous with his advice and tips for future walks. We would highly recommend both the accommodation and the guided walk."
